Laser-cut Magic Mirror frame (3mm plywood, 10W diode laser) + free parametric frame generator

I wanted to share a small project I recently finished: a Magic Mirror with a fully laser-cut frame. more info : https://www.framistik.com/showcase
The mirror itself is 620 × 375 mm, which is quite large compared to the cutting area of my laser, so the entire frame had to be designed as an assembly of multiple small laser-cut parts.
The material is 3 mm plywood, cut on a 10W diode laser using sheets of 210 × 145 mm.

Final build:
  • 10 SVG cutting sheets
  • ~56 laser-cut pieces
  • finger joints for the structure
  • rabbet layer for the mirror
  • two backing layers for the 6 mm mirror thickness
  • one sidewall layer

Everything was designed so the parts can be glued and assembled like a puzzle.
For a 10W diode laser, cutting a frame large enough for a 620 mm mirror using only small plywood sheets turned out to work surprisingly well.

Frame generator​

To design the frame, I built a small web application that generates the SVG cutting files automatically.
You enter:
  • mirror size
  • material thickness
  • sheet size
  • kerf / tolerance

and it generates the cutting sheets with finger joints and rabbet automatically.

Originally I built it only for this project, but I decided to make it public and free.
It works well for my use case, but I can’t guarantee it will cover every laser setup or project. Still, it may help others working on similar frames.
